Details

The best of Umbria - Perugia, Norcia and the Sybil's Mountains self drive

From the green hills above the Trasimeno Lake where you stay you can easily reach the historic town of Perugia, famous for its artworks and Perugina Chocolates. Breathe the mystical and sacred atmosphere by visiting the pilgrim town of Assisi, wandering in the footsteps of Saint Francis. Stop in Montefalco to taste the best Umbrian wines. Continue south, through the Valnerina Valley and onto the walled Benedictine town of Norcia, where you cant miss the mouth watering truffles, cheese and cured meats. Here a hike along the Piano Grande is an absolute must and as is a visit the unknown monastery of Preci and a short walk to the Basilica of Santa Rita da Cascia

Day 1: Arrive in Panicale

Arrival at your accommodation located in the medieval village of Panicale on the hills above the Trasimeno Lake. Relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the place. 

Dinner is at the accommodation’s great restaurant.

Day 2: Discovering Umbrian its wines

Today, stroll through the woods and olive groves around the village of Sant’Arcangelo, along the narrow medieval streets of Panicale or laze by the farm’s pool side (open from mid-May). In the afternoon take a tour through the vineyards of the Monte Vibiano estate and taste some excellent wines.  Dinner is at the accommodation.

Challenge: Driving 40km

Day 3: Boating on the Trasimeno Lake and Perugia the “chocolate town”

Its tough to choose between swimming and boating on the Trasimeno lake or wandering through the streets of Perugia, Umbrian’s most important art city and renown for the Baci Perugina chocolate factory where you can visit the chocolate museum. Dinner is at the accommodation.

Challenge: Driving 60km

Day 4: Art and wine in Assisi, Spoleto and Montefalco

On your way to your next accommodation you have plenty of things to see and to do. Not to be missed is Assisi the beautiful pilgrim town, where St. Francis was born and lived, at the foot of Mount Subasio. Stop at one of the Montefalco wineries to taste velvety dark red, lip-smacking Sagrantino. Time permitting; take a peak at the Roman amphitheatre and beautiful cathedral of Spoleto. Stay in a unique oasis of peace with perhaps the best views of Umbria, an ancient monastery recently converted into a charming hotel and a 6th century AD chapel, where the dukes of Spoleto are buried. Dinner is on your own.

Day 5: The Valnerina Valley and the Marmore waterfall

Free day to explore the cozy hamlet of Poggiodomo. We suggest an invigorating round walk along a road from Poggiodomo to the tiny neighboring village of Usigni. This is unchartered territory, pleasing to anyone seeking encounters with small-town Italian culture. From Usigni, stroll into the shady canyon following a stream to an ancient water mill. Return by foot to Poggiodomo.

Challenge: Driving 60km

Villages along the way: Marmore waterfall, Cerreto di Spoleto, Norcia 

Day 6: The day of the Saints: Norcia, Cascia and Roccaporena

Take a panoramic to Roccaporena, the sacred rock and birthplace of St. Rita da Cascia and then visit Cascia, another remarkable pilgrim town built around the Basilica visited by thousands worshipers. Dinner is on your own. 

Challenge: Driving 60km

Day 7: All things large and small: the Great Plains and hamlets of the Sibillini Park 

Wind your way  up to Castelluccio and explore one of Italy’s finest national parks: taht of the Sibillini Mountains and see a remarkable natural phenomena, the "Piano Grande", a huge mountain plateau surrounded by towering peaks that in late spring is bursting with all sorts of wild flowers!! Dive into real small-town Italy when visiting the nearby charming villages of Visso, Preci and Campi. Dinner is on your own. 

Challenge: Driving 80km

Villages along the way: Castelluccio, Visso, Preci, Campi & Norcia

Day 8: Arrivederci Norcia

The tour ends after breakfast.
