Duration: 8 days
Enjoy exhilarating hikes through a magnificent nature reserve with stunning landscapes of dramatic limestone mountains and snow-capped peaks, picture-perfect alpine pastures and idyllic meadows. This unique German-speaking part of Italy boasts an exceptional cuisine, a rich variety of wildlife including marmots and chamois, and an extraordinary variety of flowers wich bloom in their thousands in spring and summer. Beginning in Platzwiese, you walk across the Fanes-Sennes Nature Reserve to San Vigilio di Marebbe, overnighting in beautifully located mountain huts where hearty meals provide you with energy for the breathtaking walks. The walks on well-marked trails are satisfyingly long but never exhausting.
Check-in at your accommodation in Plätzwiese. If you arrive early you can go for one of the hiking options described on day 2. Or you can simply relax enjoying the beautiful view of the Dolomite peaks.
From the Berggasthof Plätzwiese, you walk via a very gradually ascending gravel road to the Dürrensteinhutte. Here begins the climb to the Strudelkopf, where you will have a beautiful view of the surroundings peaks and the famous Drei Zinnen. You walk back partly via the Dolomites Höhenweg. The other walk possible is a short hike starting and ending at Plätzwiese via Stollplatz. Pleasant and mostly easy walking, with wonderfully rewarding views, particularly during the last part. Vistas mainly of alpine meadows and fields. You first descend to Stollaplatz; from there you climb again through woods along a splashing mountain stream before returning to Plätzwiese along rolling meadows.
Challenge: 8,7 km, 350m in ascent, 350m in descent, 3 hrs (or 4,5 km, 220m in ascent, 220m in descent, 2 hrs)
From the Berggasthof Plätzwiese, you descend via a narrow path along a mountain creek down to the main road. After 1 km along a path flanking the road, you start the climb to up to Forcella Lerosa. After this, there follows a steep section through the forest and then a gradual climb on a dirt road to Rifugio Sennes.
Challenge: 17,9 km, 900m in ascent, 750m in descent, 6 hrs
After the tough walk of the day before, today you will be faced with a easier challenge. A short walk, which may be extended with the climb of the Muntejela de Senes (2787 m), will lead you over the Sennes Plateau. The view from this mountain is unsurpassed.
Challenge: 7,2 km, 300m in ascent, 300m in descent, 2,5 hrs
You first follow part of the broad Dolomite Höhenweg trail, at roughly constant elevation. Then further over rocky trails and a stepped descent through the forest. Following a zig-zag path, you climb back up above the tree line. You then descend via an unpaved road, and reach Pederü. Many visitors enter the Fanes-Sennes Park here. There follows a long climb to rifugio Fanes, partially over an unpaved road, partially along mountain trails.
Challenge: 17,5 km, 850m in ascent, 900m in descent, 6-7 hrs
This all-day route takes you up a steep, wooded hillside to the bare, rocky expanse of the Fanes plateau. At Ju della Crusc you reach the edge of the plateau, where you enjoy dramatic vistas over the valley below. You can optionally extend the hike with a climb up to the L'Ciaval peak. Note: Turn back if there is a risk of thunderstorms. Climbing the L'Ciaval requires some scrambling using both hands and feet. Do not attempt this if you are inexperienced or if the rocks are wet from recent rain. Without the peak, the walk is 4 km shorter and there is 300m less ascent and descent. As alternative, you can choose the walk via Bivacco della Pace. This hike begins as a comfortable walk along an unpaved road winding through pleasant alpine scenery, and then climbs steeply above the tree line to the dramatic Monte Castello outcrop. The track was originally a First World War military road bringing supplies to the front, which was at Monte Castello.
Challenge: 16,7 km, 900m in ascent, 700m in descent, 8 hrs (or 15 km, 850m in ascent, 850m in descent, 6,5 hrs)
You first climb steeply for 400 m to the Ju de Sant Antone. The descent is on a debris slope. The grit can move a little under your feet, but it is not dangerous. Afterwards, you are on gentler terrain, first forest, then meadows and ending in the lively tourist town of San Virgilio in Marebbe.
Challenge: 17 km, 600m in ascent, 1450m in descent, 7 hrs
The trip and our services end after breakfast.
