Walking levels:

Trips with short walks of generally three to four hours (excluding breaks) and/or optional day excursions; flat or slightly hilly terrain using well kept paths.

Cycling levels:

Easy biking in nearly flat landscape; also possible for people with little or no bicycle experience. The daily distances are approximately 30-50 km in general. Bicycles with up to 3 gears can do the job. All our adult rental bikes have at least 21 gears.

Picos de Europa Family Multi-adventure

Picos is the most surprising mountainous destination of our With the Kids program, designed for families travelling by car. Rural guesthouse accommodation in villages with true local flavour. The unique charm of a small but incredibly varied mountain range. Lush fields, cool woods, deep valleys and limestone landscapes, with a chance of spotting herds of sheep and chamoix and soaring griffon vultures. Wide range of optional routes for families, optional "river package" that includes a canyonnig and a canoeing activity or optional "mountain package", including a mini-trek to the mountain refuge at the foot of the Picu Urriellu, Asturias' most famous peak, sharing a dormitory with real climbers.

Day 1: Arrival in the Picos

Arrival at your cozy guesthouse accommodation in a tiny village (two options: in Sotres - an apartment in a mountain village- or in Berodia - with several independent traditional-style houses). Within minutes, you'll begin to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of these beautiful surroundings.

Challenge: Settle into your new "home for a week" and meet your S-cape agent.

Villages along the way: Arenas de Cabrales, Sotres/Berodia

Day 2-7: Excursions and activities in the Picos

For the next week, you will choose from a variety of walks and/or activities to enjoy summer pastures with stone barns, cool woods, high meadows with wild flowers, rushing streams and rocky areas with bizarre limestone formations. Options include: 10 different routes de hike in the Picos, different distances and degrees of difficulty; a "Mountain Package" that includes a mini- trek to a mountain refuge; a "River package" that includes a conoeing activity and a canyonning activity; a "Baby package" which includes a cot, a special carriage, a baby-rucksack and some other items for walking and enjoying your trip with babies or small children. 

Villages along the way: Arenas de Cabrales, Sotres, Tielve, Bulnes, Poncebos

Day 8: End of arrangement

"¡Adiós a los Picos!" Your arrangement comes to an end this morning, yet you leave with the feeling that you will soon return.

Challenge: Travel from Asturias.

Included:

  • Accommodation in a totally equipped traditional village house

  • Mountain pacakage: overnight accommodation in an authentic mountain hut (in dormitory rooms on a half-board basis)
  • River package: canoeing activity (kids ages over 6) and canyonning activity (kids min height 1.40m and over 8 years old)
  • Extra information about excursions, cultural visits, places of interest and local festivities.

Not Included:

  • Meals (except one dinner and one breakfast at the mountain hut)
  • Bed linen and towels in the mountain hut (take sleeping bag and/or linen with you)
  • Transport to and from accommodation

* Although this arrangement is designed to be a self-drive trip, extra transfers from and to the nearest bus stop (in Arenas de Cabrales) or airports (Santander, Oviedo and Bilbao), can be arranged.

Extra Overnights:

Extra nights cannot be booked. Standard trip is one week, from Sunday to Sunday.

Getting there and back:

  • This trip is programmed as self-drive arrangement and we recommend bringing your own car or renting a car at the nearest airport. If you're travelling by bus, it is possible to reach Sotres by public transport in combination with some extra taxi-transfers at 40,- extra cost.
  • The nearest airports to the Picos de Europa are Oviedo (OVD), also known as Asturias airport, Santander and Bilbao.
  • From the airports there are good bus connections to the city centre bus stations, where you can continue your trip by bus (ALSA bus company, see time tables at www.alsa.es).
  • From Oviedo centre there are direct buses to Arenas de Cabrales, though these services cannot be booked in advance.
  • From Santander and Bilbao you take a direct bus to Unquera and then continue by taxi to Arenas de Cabrales. It is wise to book your bus tickets and taxi transfer in advance, especially on arrival and when travelling during summer or on Friday afternoons. You can buy your bus tickets through the ALSA website www.alsa.es or through your S-cape office in Spain, also responsible for booking your taxi from Unquera to Arenas.
  • At the end of your trip, the return journey is by the same route. Our S-cape office in Arenas de Cabrales can help you make the reservations.
