Duration: 8 days
Follow the coastal road with splendid sea views and live the adventures from 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. Enjoy the steep cliffs, beautiful sandy beaches, lush vegetation, tiny idyllic bays and mysterious caves. Sip a glass of local Robola wine together with the locals in an authentic atmosphere. A possible bike tour on Odysseus' island of Ithaka completes this beautiful tour.
Good equipment awaits you upon arrival in the village Moussata, your first stay of this tour. It is possible to opt for a hybrid bike or an e-bike (Trek T-500+). The e-bike, or electric bike, makes cycling uphill as much fun as cycling downhill!
Arrive at the airport or bus station of Kefalonia. Our transfer awaits you and takes you to the first accommodation in Moussata. Fine tuning of the bicycles according your needs by the bike shop. The bike shop is excellent, with very high standards regarding maintenance, service and material!
You can relax at the swimming pool of the accommodation or maybe you want to make an afternoon short trip through the green surroundings to try out your bicycle? That is possible as the bicycles are available right away after you arrive.
Challenge: Travelling to Kefallonia Island
Villages along the way: Moussata
Today you will cycle to the eastern parts of the island. The route towards Poros is a wonderful trip to start with. You peddle via a scenic road, without considerable height differences, whilst enjoying breathtaking views over the Ionian sea towards neighbor island Zakynthos. At the village of Pastra, you descend towards the coast. You pass an area where there are still houses from before the major earthquake dating back to 1953.
Once arrived at the coast, you may opt to cycle an extra loop to the beach resort of Skala, where you may admire the mosaics from a Roman Villa. The shorter route takes you directly to the pittoresque fishing village Katelios where you may visit the Seaturtle information center. From Katelios you cycle back to Mousata.
Challenge: 40 or 50 km
Villages along the way: Pastra, Skala, Katelios
Todays trip takes you to Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. The longest option takes you over the peninsula Paliki as well.
On your way to Argostoli, you peddle via quiet, rural roads and pass from the typical villages Keramies, Metaxata en Kourkoumetata. In Argostoli you may relax on a seaside terrace with a typical Greek Frappe. Big chance to meet seaturtles near the fishing boats in the port-at least, if you are an early bird!
For the long cycle tour you cross the Gulf at Argostoli with a ferry boat and travel to Lixouri, the capital of Paliki peninsula. Here you may cycle to the fascinating red beach of Xi or cycle a bigger tour through pretty villages and remarkable sandstone landscape.
Back to Argostoli and via Lakithra back to Moussata.
Challenge: 45 or 65 km
Villages along the way: Kourkoumetata, Argostoli, Lixouri
You cycle towards Argostoli and follow the scenic route along the Bay of Argostoli until the most famous viewpoint of Myrtos Beach. On your way you pass the village where Pelagia lived (Captain Corelli’s Mandolin).
From Myrtos Beach you make an island crossing and come along numerous traditional villages before making your descend towards the idyllic fishing village Agis Efimia, your second location of this tour.
Challenge: 51 km
Villages along the way: Farsa, Myrtos
An easier tour today in the surroundings. You may visit the Drogarati Caves and the Melissani Lake. Or cycle to the lovely beach of Andisamos. To reach this beach, you will have to ascend and descend 300m. Andisamos beach was the set for part of the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin in 2001.
Challenge: 20 km
Villages along the way: Sami
No doubt today’s trip is the most impressive one. You cycle to the utmost northern fishing village of Fiscardo. The route passes from Assos peninsula with its fortress (optionally detour to Assos). Then you follow the great coastal road with tremendous views on the cliff coast to Fiscardo. This is the prettiest village of the island, because it is the only village that survived the 1953 earthquake. Besides it is surrounded by a dense wood of cypresses. Pelagia and Captain Corelli drove this way on their moped.
From Fiscardo you follow the route via the east coast back to Agia Efimia. Bare landscape, just a few tiny villages and splendid views on Ithaka follows until you arrive back in Agia Efimia.
You may shorten the trip with 20km in case you don’t drive all the way up to Fiscardo.
Challenge: 42 or 62 km
Villages along the way: Fiscardo
Your trip on Kefalonia ends with a demanding day, but it is worth the effort!
From you accommodation you cycle along the coast to Karavomilos. Then a demanding climb follows until the saddle to Mt. Aenos. After the saddle you speed up and descend to the valley Omala, the most important area for the wine producers of Kefalonia. Here originates the Robolla wine, a white wine that is internationally known. At the local wine cooperation you can see how the wine is produced and you can also taste.
In the valley of Omala there is the important Monastery Agios Gerasimos. Here you will find the cathedral, the center of Greek-orthodox Kefalonia. From Omala you cycle down hill back to Moussata.
Challenge: 44 km
Villages along the way: Sami, Valsamata
Your tour ends after breakfast. You may enjoy the swimming pool at Felix Apartements before your flight departs. You will be taken to the airport or port for your departure.
Challenge: Travel from Kefalonia
Additional night/s in any location on this tour or at any other destination in Greece
You can reach Kefalonia by plane or by ferry via Patras. From many European countries there are direct charter flights to Kefalonia Airport. You may travel via Athens as well. In that case you have to travel from Athens Airport to Kifissou bus station from where busses depart to Kefalonia six times daily. The duration of the trip is 7 hours, including the ferry crossing from Patras to Kefalonia. Please ask us for more information in case you plan to travel this way.
