Duration: 7 days
Purched above the green, in turn yellow hills of Umbria, you will find charmingly preserved medieval towns such as Montefalco famouse for its wines, Assisi domincated by Saint Frances and the "Art city" of Perugia. Cycling through the Tiber valley and the Umbrian hills means, olive groves and wheat fields, good wine, great views and great Italian food where Truffles are king.
The broad valley that lies between Perugia, Assisi and Spoleto is one of the few flat areas in the region, however all the ancient villages you stay at are on top of a hill. On the first and last ride there are longer and more gradual climbs, the other days the climbs are shorter, but occasionally very steep, upto 15% grading. A few sections are on unpaved roads.
This trip requires a basic physical condition as it mostly involving only one climb a day and the rides are short (25 to 30km a dat) leaving you plenty of time for great sightseeing.
E-bikes are available on this trip making the climbs a lot easier.
Today you arrive in Assisi. If you arrive early, you can visit the famous basilica of San Francesco, which was damaged severely in an earthquake in 1997. It has been completely restored however.
Villages along the way: Assisi
Quiet roads through the plain lead you to the capital of Umbria: Perugia. After you crosses the Tevere river, a nice spot for a pick nick, you climb the last 7 km pretty gradually to Perugia. A last short steep climb brings you in the beautiful historical centre. The city is dominated by the Corso Vannucci, a longue boulevard, perfect for an evening walk.
Challenge: 27 km, 375 m climb
Villages along the way: Perugia
In the morning there's still time to discover Perugia some more. Then you will cycle through the valley of the Tiber river to wine village Torgiano. You must visit the famous wine museum here, according to many the most precious one in Italy. The extensive collection contains interesting archaeological objects and ancient writings. After the visit a small climb leads you to the beautiful city of Bettona, of which the history goes back to 7000 b.C. The reward is not too far away: high in the hills near Passaggio, quietly surrounded by olive yards, is your very comfortable agriturismo with swimming pool. The removed 17th century complex gives you great views over Topino valley; from Perugia and Bettona to Assisi and Spello.
Challenge: 29 km, 350 m climb
Villages along the way: Bettona
The flat road along the Topino river will probably bring you in Bevagna around lunch time already. It's convenient however, because you won't find better places to use lunch than some of the restaurants in this city. Cycle, or better walk through the longue medieval main street and take some time to admire the old city walls and gates. After Bevagna you will partly follow the Strada del Sagrantino. As the famous Chianti wine is connected to Tuscany, does the Rosso di Montefalco and the Sagrantino di Montefalco belong to Umbria. The hills where these excellent wines find their origin are around the village of Montefalco. At the end of the day, a steep climb brings you to this village, nicknamed the balcony of Umbria, because of the great views over a large part of Umbria.
Challenge: 31 km, 300 m climb
Villages along the way: Montefalco
Short and easy stage through the Valle d'Umbria. You will start with a nice descent passing many olive yards. After following the river for a while you will cycle through rural area via the quiet village of Budino to nicely situated Spello. From distance you can already see this town on the slopes of the Monte Subiaso.
Challenge: 25 km, 100 m climb
Villages along the way: Spello
This last cycle stage brings you back to Assisi; in the afternoon there's time to further discover this beautiful medieval city. Today you will cycle around the Monte Subiaso, you will pass some nice, quiet hamlets. It's quite a climb around the hill. If you want to take it easy, there's a shorter and easier route to Assisi as well.
Challenge: 25 km, 500 m climb
Villages along the way: Assisi
After breakfast the trip and our services end.
