Cycling the Wine Routes of Côte d'Or & Côte de Beaune

Discover Burgundy's wonderful countryside where grapes have provided ample earnings ever since Roman times. Not just coincidence that they call this the "Côte d'Or" or golden slope. Ride the "Hautes Routes" of the "Grand Cru" through this breathtaking wine country. Encounter hidden villages surrounded by dense oak forests and pedal quietly among the renowned vineyards of Pommard, Aloxe-Corton and Meursault. Relax over a glass of Grand Cru during a "dégustation et vente". Taste, compare and fill your saddlebags with some bottles of gorgeous white or red. Discover the fairy tale castles and ancient cloisters which give Burgundy an extra "bouquet". Visit Beaune with its coloured rooftops and extraordinarily well-preserved architecture and atmosphere. There will be no shortage of good restaurants en route, where you can enjoy a tasty lunch or copious Burgundian dinner.

Day 2: Circular cycle route from Saint Romain

Your first easy going bike tour in the Côte d'Or, or more precisely, the Côte de Beaune. Follow today's varied route, armed with a delicious picnic as you admire ancient manors, vast vineyards and golden cornfields. Discover famous medieval wine-making communities and be surprised by other lesser known villages like Chaudenay and Corcelles-les-Arts.

Day 3: Cycling from Saint-Romain to Aloxe-Corton

First a short ride to beautiful Beaune, wine capital of the Côte d'Or, reportedly founded by Julius Ceasar in 52 B.C. Spoil yourself here with a delicious lunch (we'll give you some hints). Take a walk round the city and visit the 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu or 'Hospices de Beaune', a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Continue through the countryside, past rustic farms, among verdant fields of sunflowers, wheat and corn. Today's tour ends in Aloxe-Corton, celebrated wine village of the Côtes-de-Beaune, where most wines bear the classification Grand Cru.

Challenge: 22 km

Villages along the way: Saint-Romain, Beaune, Monthelie, Volnay, Pommard, Savigny-les-Beaune, Aloxe-Corton

Day 4: Circular cycle route from Aloxe-Corton

Today's ride is an easy one, following quiet lanes through the old Burgundian countryside. Cycle past the quintessential castles and farming villages of 'La Bourgogne' and taste some interesting 'vins d'appellation'. Then, from the town of Chorey-lès-Beaune, you cycle into the world famous Côte-de-Nuits region. As you pedal along through old oak forests and past historical churches, stop for a break in one of the sleepy farm villages.

Challenge: 32 km

Villages along the way: Aloxe-Corton, Chorey-lès-Beaune, Ladoix-Serrigny, Prémeaux-Prissey, Corgoloin

Day 5: Cycling from Aloxe-Corton to Gilly-lès-Cîteaux

And don't forget Brochon: to savour its 'vins estimés' and admire the castle where the late 19th-century poet Stephen Liégeard lived. Occasional short sections on roads with a bit more traffic, but for the most part you cycle along quiet country lanes today.

Challenge: 38 km

Villages along the way: Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, Fixin, Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vougeot
