Trips with short walks of generally three to four hours (excluding breaks) and/or optional day excursions; flat or slightly hilly terrain using well kept paths.

Cycling levels:

Easy biking in nearly flat landscape; also possible for people with little or no bicycle experience. The daily distances are approximately 30-50 km in general. Bicycles with up to 3 gears can do the job. All our adult rental bikes have at least 21 gears.

Cycling Asturias: la Costa Verde

E-bikes are available for this destination !!!

The green north coast of the Iberian penninsula makes the perfect setting for a cycling holiday. Over hills, or more mountainous terrain if you choose, you'll cycle along the coastal ranges of El Cuera and El Sueve, beneath the impressive snowy peaks of the Picos de Europa. Following sections of the Pilgrims' Route to Santiago de Compostela (Saint James' Way), you'll visit ruins and Romanesque chapels. After a stop in the cider-making capital of Villaviciosa, you cycle off to the friendly city of Gijon for a tapas feast to celebrate the end of your journey. Extra nights can be booked to extend your stay in order to enjoy the beach in Gijon or visit an outstanding Gothic gem, San Salvador Cathedral in nearby Oviedo.

Day 1: Arrival in Vilde

Arrival in Vilde, on Spain's Costa Verde, where you are welcomed at a charming family-run agroturismo.

Challenge: Arrival on the Green Coast of Spain.

Villages along the way: Vilde

Day 2: Circular route from Vilde

Circular cycling route from Vilde. You start the trip off with a lovely ride through rolling hills, never too far from the sea, right on the border between Cantabria and Asturias, two emerald provinces of Northern Spain.

Challenge: 41km, 375m in ascent OR 47km, 440m in ascent

Villages along the way: Merodio, Muñorrodero, Pechón, Pesués

Day 3: From Vilde to Cué

A quiet ride across the border and into the Principality of Asturias, through charmingly authentic villages and along cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. There's the opportunity of stopping off to visit the Cueva del Pindal, beautifully situated cave with valuable prehistoric paintings, or to admire the Romanesque ruins of Santa Tina church.

Challenge: 30km, 325m in ascent OR 41km, 500m in ascent

Villages along the way: Colombres, Pimiango, La Borbolla, Andrín

Day 4: From Cué to Nueva de Llanes

Choose between an ascent to enjoy lovely views from the Sierra del Cuera coastal range OR a gentler ride through green hills, among fields of grazing cows and tiny villages of quiet beauty. En route there are several spots where you can stop for a refreshing paddle in the sea.

Challenge: 29km, 395m in ascent OR 37km, 650m in ascent

Villages along the way: Llanes, El Mazuco, Rales

Day 5: From Nueva to Sales

Follow the northern variant of the Camino de Santiago pilgrims' trail (Saint James' Way) through the foothills of the Sierra del Sueve. This tiny yet impressive mountain range is home to the stunning black elegance of the Caballo Asturcón, a beautiful breed of horses native to Asturias.

Challenge: 39km, 330m in ascent OR 42km, 400m in ascent

Villages along the way: Caravia, Colunga

Day 6: From Sales to Agüero

The estuary town of Villaviciosa, cider-making capital of Asturias, is surrounded on all sides by green hills covered with apple orchards. A visit to its inviting historical centre recalls the past, proving that this was once an important stop along the Camino for pilgrims making their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Challenge: 34km, 420m in ascent

Villages along the way: Priesca, Villaviciosa, Tazones

Day 7: From Agüero to Gijón

Your last day of cycling is slightly shorter but starts off with a good ascent. Climb up through the lush greenery of the Asturian countryside and then, from an elevation of 220m, sail down into the city of Gijon, riding along the beautiful San Lorenzo Beach boardwalk all the way to your hotel.

Challenge: 29km, 240m in ascent

Villages along the way: Arroes, Peón, Somio

Day 8: End of arrangement

Your arrangement ends today after breakfast.

Extra Overnight:

Extra nights may be booked at any of the standard accommodations, at hotels on the coast, or at city hotels (Gijón, Oviedo or Bilbao).

Getting there and back:

  • The nearest airports are Oviedo (OVD, also known as Asturias airport), Santander (SDR) and Bilbao (BIO).
  • Easy shuttle connections to city centre bus stations, then transport by bus to your destination (ALSA, check timetables at www.alsa.es).
  • From Oviedo city centre, Santander or Bilbao, you can catch a direct bus to Unquera. You then continue by taxi to Vilde (2,5km).
  • It is wise to book your bus tickets and taxi transfer in advance, especially if you're travelling in summer or at weekends. Bus tickets can be purchased in advance on the ALSA website (www.alsa.es) or through your S-cape Travel office. 
  • Return journey from Gijón, easy bus connections to all 3 airports (Asturias-OVD, Santander and Bilbao). The S-cape Travel office in Arenas de Cabrales (Spain) can help you make the reservations.
