Cycling levels:

Easy biking in nearly flat landscape; also possible for people with little or no bicycle experience. The daily distances are approximately 30-50 km in general. Bicycles with up to 3 gears can do the job. All our adult rental bikes have at least 21 gears.

Details

Picos de Europa - Cabrales, Cares Gorge and Cider

The Picos de Europa: beath-taking landscapes, deeply-rooted tradition and tasty regional gastronomy in a truly magical corner of the world. Enjoy the best of the county of Cabrales on this short break and immerse yourself in both the nature and culture of Asturias. Adventure in the Picos National Park on a combined 4x4 and self-guided walking excursion, which completely circles the Picos' Central Massif. The next morning, you'll be treated to a guided ethnographic and cultural excursion in the village of Asiegu. Fascinating overview of the history of local farming traditions, with lunch at an authentic cider press in the village.

Day 1: Arrival in Arenas de Cabrales

Today you arrive in Arenas de Cabrales, situated on the north side of the Picos de Europa National Park. Settle in at your comfortable accommodation. Optional self-guided village stroll or walking route (1 to 2 hours). Or try your hand at pouring cider on one of the outdoor terraces.

Challenge: Travel to Asturias.

Day 2: Walking and 4x4 excursion

Combined walking and 4x4 excursion through dazzling limestone landscapes in the Picos de Europa National Park. First, by landrover traversing areas with restricted access. In the afternoon, self-guided walking route through the spectacular Cares Gorge.

Challenge: 4x4 and walking excursion (12km, 3.5hrs).

Day 3: The Cabrales cheese and cider tour

A 10-minute drive to the village of Asiego to experience the "Ruta 'l Quesu y la Sidra" - a fascinating cultural excursion guided by highly qualifed geographers specializing in local history and tradition. Marvel at the experts' detailed analysis of traditional life in a small village. Then enjoy a real Asturian meal, including regional specialities such as Cabrales blue cheese and local cider, all served in your hosts' own authentic cider house. Program ends after lunch today.

Getting there and away:

  • The nearest airports to the Picos de Europa are Oviedo (OVD), also known as Asturias airport, Santander and Bilbao.
  • From the airports there are good bus connections to city centre bus stations, where you can catch a connecting bus to your destination (ALSA bus company, see time tables at www.alsa.es ).
  • From Oviedo city centre there are direct buses to Arenas de Cabrales, though these services cannot be booked in advance. From Santander and Bilbao, you take a direct bus to Unquera and then continue by taxi to Arenas de Cabrales.
  • It is wise to book your bus tickets and taxi transfer in advance, especially for arrivals and when travelling in summer or on Friday afternoons. You can buy your bus tickets through the ALSA website www.alsa.es or through your S-cape office in Spain, also responsible for booking your taxi from Unquera to Arenas.
  • At the end of your trip, the return journey is by the same route. Our S-cape office in Arenas de Cabrales (Spain) can help you make the reservations.
