One of Sicily's most fascinating characteristics is the juxtaposition of constantly changing colours.
The sea is a predominant feature, with its many shades of green, turquoise and blues, contrasting sharply with the intense whiteness of the fishing villages and the black lava of the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. Most of the islands are active volcanoes of which we only see a small tip.
Mount Etna, the ever present, overpowering giant rises 3323m above sea level. Here there are ancient lava flows where the Mediterranean vegetation thrives vigorously, scored by the new dark and barren lava flows that cross the mountain sides. The rugged cliffs and razor-sharp crests offer great panoramas to the walker's eyes as do the small villages built like eagle's nests on the mountain slopes and the greens, and yellows and browns of the seemingly infinite succession of cultivated fields. Here, daily life passes away slowly, following the rhythm of the seasons, all strongly influenced by old rituals and traditions. The hard life is made sunnier by the excellent Sicilian food and wine that uses many fresh vegetables full of vivid colors.
Arrive in Catania airport within 1pm. Here you take a bus or the train to Milazzo where you board the hydrofoil to Lipari where you stay for 4 nights. It is also possible to book a private transfer from Catania airport to Milazzo
Villages along the way: Lipari
This varied walk on the south point of Lipari, with nice views on the island of Vulcano starts in the bustling town of Lipari that has an impressive castle and a very interesting archeological museum

Villages along the way: Lipari
A demanding, but very beautiful walk, especially when the weather is clear. On your way you have magnificent views on the town of Lipari and a big part of the island, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi, Sicily and you'll be on top of the crater of the volcano. The culminating point of the walk is 500m after the highest point of the walk, this section is steep, heavily eroded, but not dangerous. A real adventure! Because of the erosion you can spot big fragments of Obsidian

One of the most spectacular walks of this trip is on Stromboli Island as this volcano is constantly erupting. This walk can be done in several ways: 1. You can take the public day boat to Stromboli and do the walk up to 450m above sea level on your own. 2. Prebook an afternoon and evening boat excursion that takes you to Stromboli where you have time to walk to 450 a.s.l. and when sun sets you are taken to see the Sciara del Fuoco, the impressive eruption and lava flow 3. Prebook an afternoon and evening boat excursion that takes you to Stromboli where you meet an authorized volcanologist guide that accompanies you in a guided group walk to the top of Mount Stromboli 900m a.s.l. (Approx 5 h walk finishing in the dark) Access to the top is limited to 80 people at a time and only if accompanied by a mountain guide/volcanologist. The walk to the top of Stromboli can be restricted or cancelled at short notice due to the volcanic activity and the weather. In all cases, take a flashlight with you as there is no public street lights on Stromboli and it get very dark at night. This tour should be made as early as possible during the week because the sea conditions can change quickly, making it impossible to go to Stromboli
Villages along the way: Stromboli

Return to Lipari with the afternoon boat
