Walking on Tenerife

Tenerife: one of the most fascinating of the Canary Islands, due to the great variety of landscapes it offers. Rainforests of aromatic bay laurel trees, vast deserts with bizarre basalt formations, humid areas with exuberant vegetation, colourful volcanic slopes . . . and the king of all Spanish peaks: El Teide. Discover this world of extreme beauty while enjoying the luxury of four comfortable and charming hotels.

Day 1: Arrival in Orotava

Flight to Tenerife North airport and arrival at the first accommodation in La Orotava, with its lovely historical quarter centered around the Plaza de la Constitución. For early arrivals, time to take a stroll along the steep lanes of this picturesque village. 1,5 hours.

Challenge: Travel to Tenerife.

Day 2: Through Orotava Valley

Today's route begins with a short drive to Aguamansa, where you encounter the wooded slopes of El Teide. Here you begin a circular walk through the lush vegetation of the Valle de Orotava. Ascent to Los Organos, an endless series of rock formations whose shapes resemble, as their Spanish name suggests, organ pipes. In clear weather, unforgettable views of the valley and El Teide.

Challenge: 12,5km. 550m ascent and descent. 5,5 hours.

Villages along the way: Aguamansa

Day 3: Onward to Garachico

Today you move on to the next accommodation, situated in the coastal town of Garachico. The drive takes you through lava fields and bay laurel forests. Then there are several walks to choose from, as you explore the hilly terrain near Punta de Teno, a real paradise on Tenerife's westernmost cape. Interesting flora to be admired, here at "land's end". Or take an optional rest day and relax at the beach.

challenge: 15km or 19km. 300m ascent, 1200m descent. 5,5 or 6,5 hours.

Villages along the way: La Montañeta, Erjos and Silos

Day 4: To Teno Alto

Today's route takes you through open woodlands, across farmland and along spectacular ravines to reach the small village of Teno Alto. You then cross a high plateau, through a strange wonderland among fields of giant euphorbia plants. In clear weather, stupendous views to the island of La Gomera.

Challenge: 13km. 500m ascent, 900m descent 6,5 hours.

Villages along the way: Teno Alto, Buenavista

Day 5: Circular walks. Las Cañadas del Teide

Today you drive to the Parador de las Canadas, situated at the base of El Teide volcano. You'll have the rest of the day to enjoy impressive surroundings, with 2 walks to choose from: a short, circular route around Roques de Garcia, or a demanding but rewarding ascent to Guajara, the second highest peak on Tenerife.

Challenge: 1.5 hours car drive. 6km. 250m ascent and descent (3 h.) OR 10km, 600m ascent and descent (5 h.)

Villages along the way: Cañadas del Teide

Day 6: From las Cañadas to El Portillo

Today you get better acquainted with El Pico del Teide, wandering through the bizarre landscape of Las Cañadas. Again, several options: the standard walk leads from the Parador to El Portillo along an easy-to-follow unsurfaced track, with magnificent views. At the end of the day, you drive to La Laguna.

Challenge: 16km, ascent 70m, descent 180m, 5 hrs.

Day 7: Northern Tenerife

Several routes to choose from, after driving to the north side of the island. Both walking and driving itineraries offer lovely views. On foot, you follow coastal paths, deep gorges and picturesque farming villages. Exquisite landscapes in the prettiest part of Tenerife.

Challenge: Max 16km, 1040m in ascent, 600m in descent, 6 hrs.

Villages along the way: Taganana, Afur and Taborno

Day 8: End of arrangement

Your walking program comes to an end today after breakfast. Departure from Tenerife.

Challenge: Travel from La Laguna.

  • Lunches and dinners. In most accommodations pack lunches  can be ordered or you can also buy food provisions in most villages.

  • National Park permit to El Teide summit, nor needed for S-Cape wakls 
  • El Teide cable car ticket
  • **Any visitor can take the cable car to the viewing point situated 500m below El Teide summit. If you plan to walk to the top, you must apply for a permit from the National Park office (request online).

Optional Services:

Extra nights can be booked in advance at any of the accommodations in the program or at the beach near Tenerife Sur airport or Los Cristianos harbour.
