Duration: 7 days
Cycle this wonderful classic route along the Mosel River in Germany. The tour starts in historical Trier and ends in Koblenz, at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine Rivers. The beautiful landscapes of this valley, and its rich culture and history, will make your tour a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Enjoy small Medieval villages along the river and visit some of the numerous castles a bit higher up. The terrain is not too hilly and you cycle mainly on tarmac routes, sometimes along cycling lanes, sometimes along quiet roads. Therefore, this tour is also suitable for families with children.
Trier, a fascinating town, was once the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Visit the Porta Nigra, the best-preserved Roman city gates north of the Alps, or the Basilica, the largest preserved ancient roofed structure. The local thermal baths give visitors insight into Roman bathing culture. And the Roman bridge remains open to traffic, even after 2000 years. If you have booked a rental bike, it will be waiting for you at your hotel.
Villages along the way: Trier
Your first day of cycling leads you out of Trier to the town of Schweich, with its attractive ferry tower. From here on, vineyards dominate the landscape until you reach your destination, Trittenheim. In Mehring there is an interesting Roman excavation site, Villa Rustika. And at the Detzem sluice you will be able to watch as boats go through the locks.
Challenge: ca. 37/45 km
Villages along the way: Trier, Schweich, Trittenheim
Today you cycle through Neumagen, the oldest wine-growing area of Germany, then on to Piesport, with its interesting Roman wine press. Pedaling through small wine-producing villages, you reach Bernkastel, which is famous for its Medieval timber framed houses. Soon after, you arrive at your destination, Zeltingen with its pretty buildings in Baroque style.
Challenge: ca. 20/35 km
Villages along the way: Trittenheim, Neumagen, Piesport, Bernkastel, Zeltingen
Today's tour leads you along the Mosel through Kröv and the famous wine-producing region of "Kröver Nacktarsch", then on to Traben-Trarbach. This small town is a jewel of the Classical and Jugendstil styles. Your route continues along the Zeller Hamm, a hill which the Mosel loops past, and you cycle on to Zell which, with 4.5 million grapevines, is one of the largest wine-growing areas in Germany.
Challenge: ca. 34/41 km
Villages along the way: Zeltingen, Traben-Trarbach, Zell
Cycling through small well-kept villages, you reach Beilstein, a place so beautiful that 5 films have been shot here. Towering above the town is the ruin of Metternich, once owned by the chancellor of the same name, one of the most powerful men in Europe. You cycle on to the holiday destination of Cochem, with its excellently restored historical town centre. With the Coraidelstein ruin as a backdrop, your tour for the day comes to an end.
Challenge: ca. 47 km
Villages along the way: Zell, Beilstein, Metternich, Cochem, Treis-Karden
Today you reach Koblenz, cycling comfortably along well-planned cycling paths. Don't forget to stop off for a look at the oldest wooden framed house in Germany, the 'Abteihof' in Kobern-Gondorf dating back to 1320! The headlands of the 'Deutsche Eck' (German Corner) lie at the confluence of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Take the opportunity here to visit the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, with its fantastic panoramic views.
Challenge: ca. 39 km
Villages along the way: Treis-Karden, Kobern-Gondorf, Ehrenbreitstein, Koblenz
After breakfast you return to Trier or travel back home. We would be more than happy to extend your trip with an extra night(s) stay along the Mosel cycling path.
