Walking Umbria

Looking a spiritual awakening, or simply to immerse yourself in the mountains? Then this walking tour is for you. Stroll from the medieval town of Spoleto into the dark Valnerina woods and along the rugged peaks of the Monti Sibillini National Park. As you breathe in the fresh mountain air, you can sample the incredible "tartufo nero", a regional specialty from Norcia. Follow ancient country roads under the Umbrian sun. Your spirit shall be uplifted.

Day 1: Arrive in spoleto

Make sure you arrive early enough to pass a few pleasant hours acclimatizing to your new surroundings and discovering the ancient secrets of this charming Umbrian city. Sit down for a glass of Montefalco wine amidst monuments dating back to Roman times and see for yourself why Spoleto is called the "city of art"

Day 2: Walk over the Roman Aqueduct to Scheggino

As you bid adieu to lively Spoleto, you walk into the peaceful Valeriana mountains. Cross over the Ponte delle Torri bridge to encounter the magnificent oak forests of Monte Luco. Ascend through Valcieco to the highest ridge of Castelmonte and then descend amidst an overgrown path into the valley near the tiny picturesque village of Scheggino.

Challenge: 16 km, 600m climb, 700m descent, 5.5 hours

Day 3: Walk from Gavelli to Poggiodomo

After breakfast, travel by car to the small village of Gavelli for a panoramic walk to the highest point of Monte Coscerno (1684m). On a clear day you have a 360 degrees view of the breathtaking Umbrian countryside, dotted with the Sibillini peaks to the east and the Gran Sasso to the south. The descent takes you gradually down to Poggiodomo.

Challenge: 16 km, 820m climb, 970m descent, 5 hours

Day 4: Through the heart of the Sibillini National Park to Norcia

Breakfast today is followed by a longer car transfer from the Valnerina to Visso, a small village in the Monti Sibillini National Park. Delve deep into the Apennine mountains, through the Valle di Visso to the valley of Preci. Pass ancient villages to reach the walls of Norcia, a captivating medieval city famous for its "tartufo nero" and numerous butcher shops.

Challenge: 17 km, 800m climb, 820m descent, 6.5 hours

Day 5: Arrivederci Norcia

The tour ends after breakfast.

Getting there and away:

The best city to fly into is Rome, to one of its two commercial airports: Fiumicino "Leonardo da Vinci" Airport, major international airport; or Ciampino, smaller and serviced more by low-cost European airlines. There are regular busses and trains which go to Rome's main Termini train station, from which you can easily hop on a train for Spoleto.
There are also airports in the cities of Pisa and Florence which have train connections to Spoleto.
There is also a regular bus service from Norcia to Spoleto.

If you come in your own car, it is better to park in Norcia as the hotel in Spoleto does not have a parking lot and parking in town is limited.

Dogs on the trip:

It is possible to take small dogs on this trip, but at the accommodation in Scheggino the dog has to sleep in the garden. Ask us about the dog supplement.
