Details

Walking the Monsant in Catalonia

Montsant, the Sacred Mountain, part of a beautiful limestone massif in southern Catalunya. A lovely area of quiet villages bordered by vineyards of well-known wine-producing regions. Travel on foot to fascinating historical sites, such as the Monastery at Poblet, walking through tranquil woods with an amazing diversity of Mediterranean vegetation. the delicious catalonian cuisine and fine wines will also make this trip a great gastronomy experience, relaxing in beautiful rural and natural settings.

Day 1: Arrival in La Morena

Arrival at your friendly accommodation in La Morera de Montsant.

Challenge: Travel to Montsant

Villages along the way: La Morera de Montsant

Day 2: Circular walk from La Morera

Walk via the hamlet of Poboleda, among the vineyards which surround these wine-producing villages, to visit the centuries-old remains of Cartoixa d'Escaladei Monastery.

Challenge: 5 hours, ascent/descent 490m.

Day 3: From La Morera To Ulldemolins

A steep ascent to the top of the Serra Major range, along cliffs with marvellous views. Descent on the far side of the massif, through Pi de la Carabasseta and then on to Ulldemolins.

Challenge: 6,5 hours, ascent 680m, descent 790m.

Day 4: From Ulldemolins to Prades

One of the most beautiful walks in Mediterranean Europe following an impressive gorge, with the descent down into a side ravine. On the way to Prades, you pass a small church and monastery and then reach this lively historical town of red stone monuments.

Challenge: 5 hours, ascent/descent 430m.

Day 5: Circular walk from Prades

Walk toward Capafonts on a steep ascent to lovely l'Abellera monastery chapel, perched high up on a cliff. Time on your return to explore the village of Prades.

Challenge: 3,5 hours. ascent/descent 450m.

Day 6: From Prades to Montblanc

An outstanding nature walk through the Montes de Prades, with incredibly diverse vegetation, to the picturesque medieval town of Montblanc.

Challenge: 7,5 hrs, ascent 460m, descent 970m.

Day 7: To the Poblet Monastery

A lovely day-walk through the Conca de Barberà wine region to reach the awe-inspiring Cistercian Monastery of Poblet. Vineyards, olive trees and almond orchards compliment this feast for the eyes.

Challenge: 5 hours, ascent/descent 200m.

Villages along the way: Poblet, Montblanc

Day 8: En of arrangement

Your arrangement ends today after breakfast.

Challenge: Travel from Montsant.

Getting there and back:

The nearest airports to the Sierra de Montsant are Reus airport and Barcelona.

From the Reus airport there is a good bus connection to the town centre bus station, where you can continue your trip by taxi.

From Barcelona airport you should first go by train to Barcelona Sants Central Station, and from there take a train to Reus (see www.renfe.es). Once in Reus, you should take a taxi to La Morera de Montsant.

At the end of your trip, you take a train from Girona to Barcelona (www.renfe.es).
