All over Spain, Asturias is known as a magical destination: rural, green, friendly, tasty and authentic. The perfect place to relax, walk, cycle, swim and sample local delicacies. Thanks to a relatively mild climate, temperatures here are pleasant - even in the height of summer - and the landscape remains lush year round. The Asturian countryside offers a patchwork of pastures, woodlands and hamlets, bordered by a magnificent coastline to the north and steep limestone massifs to the south. Rich in cultural traditions, vibrant historical towns, (pre-)Romanesque monuments and welcoming accommodations, charming Asturias makes visitors feel at home instantly.
You arrive in the pleasant village of Proaza. Your accommodation is a family-run hotel situated just at the town´s square.
Today we drive to Sama de Grado, where our walk starts. Following quiet country roads with just one ascent, up to the Sierra de Buanga. As you walk, sweeping views widen to reveal an ever-expanding landscape of small mountain ranges. You reach Linares, one in a series of villages along this narrow mountain ridge, then begin your descent toward the Trubia River. Down in the valley, you pick up a converted railway path, now the popular walking and cycling route known as the Senda del Oso. This “Way of the Bear” takes you past a small reserve where two Asturian brown bears have been raised in captivity in a desperate attempt to increase the native (bear) population. At the end of the day, you reach your accommodation.
