Just back from...

I'm an S-Cape Travel guide and have just rechecked the Cinque Terre and Portofino and Camogli area. Have controlled that after the disaster of last autumn when a flood have hit the whole are with serious damages in Monterosso and Vernazza.
All the routes are in good status, except the route 2 that was already closed between Manarola and Vernazza.

Responsible Tourism

Three people on a bicycle.

  • All trips comprise walking or cycling from one location to the next, minimizing environmental impact.
  • We strongly urge independent travelers to use public transport, local busses and trains to reach their destination or when they need transport during their holiday. With group tours, we try to minimize the amount of private bus transfers.
  • Most of our revenue is spent within local communities.
  • Most of the accommodations and restaurants used are family-owned and run small scale businesses, in order to maximize the local experience and leave the generated wealth within the community.
  • Wherever possible we work with accommodations and restaurants converted from traditional and/or historic buildings, asserting the importance of preserving local heritage.
  • Meals included, as well as recommended restaurants for independent dining, serve local/traditional cuisine made with locally produced/grown, often organic products.
  • To create employment in the area visited, local people are employed whenever and wherever possible.
  • In our offices:
  • - we use "green" energy to run the place.
    - We do not print a paper brochure, working only online and mostly via e-mail.
    - 95% of our work flow is digitally archived, having nearly completely eliminated printing.
    - We differentiate and recycle our rubbish.
  • We fight against tax evasion by requiring all suppliers to issue official invoices.
  • All internal and external staff are regularly employed and paid more than the union recommended wages.

FAQ's

Q's on the booking process

How can I make a booking for one of your trips?

Easy, just fill in the booking form completely, push the 'send' button and that's that. The staff in our European offices will handle the rest and will contact you if they need further information.

Is my booking always directly confirmed?

No, almost all bookings are made 'on request.' This means that we'll first have to contact all accommodations to see if space is available on the dates you've chosen. If one of the accommodations is fully booked up, we'll contact you to discuss alternatives.

What happens after my booking request is approved?

You will then receive an invoice and your travel contract by e-mail, with all the details on how to make your first payment.

Q's on travelling to and from your destination

How do I organise my international flights?

You must book your international flights yourself or through your local travel agent. Be sure to book your flights only after you have received the final confirmation for your S-cape tour. That way you'll be sure of the arrival and departure dates.

Can S-cape assist me with domestic flights & trains to get to my destination?

Yes, within Italy and Spain we can help you with booking domestic flights and train tickets. Please do not hesitate to contact our local offices, we all speak English fluently and will be happy to assist you.

What type of accommodation will I stay at?

For some comfortable accommodation is a must, for others discarding day-to-day creature comforts is very much part of the adventure.

All our tours are comfort rated, from roughing it through to in style, so you can choose from 4 different levels of comfort.

How do we decide where to stay?

  • Most of our tours are comfort rated 3 (the category we call "comfortable"). You can expect to stay in en-suite, air-conditioned rooms in good quality, comfortable family run hotels, with possibly a night or two somewhere more basic to allow the itinerary to get off the beaten tourist track.
  • Quality of service and standards of cleanliness and safety are more important to us than the hotel facilities; to us a friendly welcome and comfortable bed matter more than TVs and mini-bars.
  • We prefer smaller, family run hotels, as they usually offer a warmer welcome and the money we spend gets re-invested in the local economy.
  • We normally choose hotels that don't insist on half-board or full-board packages: this gives you the flexibility to eat where you want and doesn't tie you to the (often rather bland) hotel restaurant.
  • Accommodation choices are based on what's available in the places we want to stay: if that mean's a simple guesthouse, so be it - we choose the accommodation to suit the itinerary, not the other way round.
